Eden Valley Mountaineering Club

Introduction

Based in the Eden Valley, our mountaineering club, founded in 1974, has a history of trad climbing, sport climbing, fell walking, cycling, ski-touring and much, much more. We are the club for all outdoor activity enthusiasts.

Eden Valley Mountaineering Club (EVMC) is based in Penrith and the Eden Valley. The club is active all year and puts you in touch with a wide range of like-minded individuals.

Join us and enjoy some great days out. Members are active in a wide range of fell and mountain-based pursuits, from ice climbing to sport climbing, fell walking, running, cycling, ski-touring and much, much more. We organise a comprehensive range of activities which include: a weekly Wednesday evening climbing meet; monthly climbing meets; monthly scrambling / walking meets; weekends away to UK destinations; overseas trips; ad hoc meets; social events.

In the winter we are often found at the Eden Climbing Wall dreaming of the sun. Club members are out on the local crags every Wednesday evening in the summer.

Various members made their ways to Bram Crag Quarry, last night, some going to the top quarry and others to the Lower. There was a lot of wet rock but still areas to climb on. In the Lower Quarry - Nappyrash; Seconds Away; Forever Young and Marine Slab drew attention due to dry starts. I was interested in climbing Nappyrash, 31 years since I first climbed it - can't believe I did it onsight without bolts ! That's what new fatherhood was doing to me !! I remember getting a nut behind a flake in the prominent corner to the right of the third bolt - went back shortly afterwards to bolt the route and the flake had gone and now there is the clean corner.Takes a bit of getting used to the place and good to trust your feet - not good when it is wet though !!!Upper Quarry team climbed Slaying the Badger (I think) and one Lower Quarry team went up and repulsed by rather damp Blencathra Badger. Tales recalled in the White Horse Inn afterwards !It was also Kong Series Fell Race up (not down) Blencathra last night. Saw various bods in the pub including Martin Stone and Paul Cornforth. Paul looking as fit and as keen as ever. Winners time up Blencathra from the pub was 21mins - first lady (3rd overall) was 23mins !!Saw Harry Blenkinsop today who said he did a similar run from the car park along the road some years ago, with Duncan Overton, in about that time !!! ... Rosa Menendez from Lancaster University has contacted the BMC again to see if we could send out invite for BMC members (and others) to record sightings of the Mountain Ringlet butterfly in the Cumbrian Fells.Last year was a bit last minute, although we understand some extra sightings came in. A small band (two of us) met up on a windy Brough Scar last night and decided to go in search of Helbeck Wood Quarry (last went here eons ago ! - in FRCC Eden Valley guide) - now seems to be access to the crag over a style to the right of the crag. The evening meet this evening was supposed to be at Falcon Crag - never really been too popular but with a bird ban on the crag then climbing there was a no-no !Problem also that the meet leader wasn't really on the ball and sent an email out today about the meet ! Various crags were banded about but no great enthusiasm - but Belinda raised idea of Carrock Fell with its bouldering; Snail Shell Crag and walking - so a "meet" was established. Ron arrived at 7.00pm to find Belinda's sole car duly parked and a telephone conversation found here on the top of Carrock Fell. Ron set of in "pursuit" via Recess Route and the right path to the rather windy summit - but (surprise, surprise) no Belinda. On the way down the message got through to Ron that Belinda was trying to rescue a sheep !! So down to the bottom - meet Belinda in the gathering dusk and back up to the sheep, which was positioned on a nice ledge (sans grass) but limited options to get off. The rescuers felts that in the circumstances best to leave the sheep for another day !So - not much climbing but an interesting evening !A bit of pre-warning - next week's evening meet is at Bram Crag Quarry !! ... Well do to Rob for retrobolting of Brough Scar. I was pleased to help a little way today with cleaning up Boogey Down. Steep starts !!!Thanks to Rob as well as Eric and Alastair for work on the crag. Will be great to have the crag retrobolted - aldo other lines near by !Looks like will need Tony or Steph to climb the harder routes.Nice to see a shrew on the track on the way up there.I am sure Rob would appreciate help with folk going up there with him !Ron ... Good turn out to do battle with Coudy Rock, last night. Good to get back there - but all felt steep and whopplier - but there we are !Would be good if someone could spend a bit of time and clear the briers and grass on the wall on the right - it would not take that long !!!!!! Have a handclippers; a brodler to poke into the cracks to tease out the veg and garden gloves.
